We learnt so much!
In April the Jackals ( the older class) took part in a Science week. We had great fun and learnt about so many things;
First we had a science hunt and searched around the school for anything about science, we tried to sort them into Biology , Physics and Chemistry.
We soon found out that science is often a mixture of the 3. When we do lots of exercise our muscles work hard (biology), how they move our bodies is also physics. We breathe in oxygen and breathe out Carbon Dioxide ( chemistry)
Then we acted out a play about Isaac Newton. He sat under a tree reading a book.
and an apple fell on his head. What made that happen? GRAVITY!
There is less gravity on the moon so you could jump 7 x higher. Fidza could jump higher than the classroom if he was on the moon! Here is Philippa jumping.
Gravity is a force, we had fun with forces and a tug of war. Why do you think we measure force in Newtons? ( remember the apple and the tree).
The Bush Babies ( younger class) helped with the tug of war.
We dropped a rock, a feather and a Monopoly house from the climbing frame. We tested our predictions for which would hit the ground first, we made it a fair test by tipping them off a board. Gravity was the same on all 3 but the rock and monopoly house didn't have as much drag ( friction) as the feather. The feather was the slowest. We added a toy car as well- that rolled off the board first so it wasn't a fair test.
The sun has gravity it holds all the planets in place. we made a model of the solar system and then we found out lots of information about the planets. We made fact files and tested each other.
Saturn and Jupiter are the gas giants. We used the parachute to explain about solid liquid and gas. When something is solid the molecules don't have much energy in them, they have a bit more for liquid and loads of energy for gas.
Science is such fun and its all around us.
We even made model gliders and took them to the horse school to fly. They flew so high they got stuck in the prickly Acacia trees
